I've been asked by Keong to attempt to write something about the sports carnival so this will be the first and perhaps, if I'm satisfied with it, the last draft...
The NSW Sports Carnival was recently held at University of Sydney's Aquatic Centre. Sports being contested on the day include Tennis, Volleyball, Basketball, Netball, Badminton and the day before, Soccer, as the Aussies would call it.
Winners of these matches will ultimately win the right to represent the state of NSW at the national MASCA games in September in competition against other Malaysians from universities all over this land down under.
The day started off well enough with most players turning up in time for their matches, but as the day wore on, it seems there are a few people who still think they are in Malaysia and arrived up to one and a half hour late! Shock Horrors!
There were displays of sportsmanship and displays of agony and wrath and also lets not forget joy and triumph as players fought out their respective matches in earnest. The first games for the day were basketball and netball, played on adjacent courts, there were people rooting for their teams shouting from both sides of the gym and then of course there are the sweating men, women, boys and girls on court who may have added a few of their own words.
Later on in the day, it was volleyball, badminton and tennis's turn to be in the limelight. As one sided as some matches are, there are enough interesting ones to keep us rooted and cheering for our friends/teammates or boy/girlfriend. Some judges/referees were MIA (missing in action for the uninitiated) and some were decidedly unfair (in the opinion of some) but lets not mar the achievement of the organisers by dwelling on this.
Altogether a fun and tiring day for all who turned up and for those of you who did not witness all the explosive actions on the courts and at the park, remember to turn up next year and cheer your fellow countrymen on! If you think you play better than them, tryout for your chance at glory! If you suck? As we all say, don't be so perasan ok? But hey, Malaysia Boleh! And so it was that a wonderfully entertaining day with its share of tears and joy came to an end, a very big GET WELL SOON to the basketball player from Macquarie who got injured!
Now how was that? Not too interesting? A little of a bore? I thought it sounded like a journalist running out of things to say and I'm wondering if it may be too short or too long...
