I arrived in Kuching on Sunday, my very first time in East M'sia actually, and I am actually pleasantly surprised by the place. It is laid back, decidedly friendly and clean, gives me a feeling of Brissie mixed with Malacca. Brissie cause of the river running through it and how the banks of the river is dotted with walks, parks, hotels and nice buildings. Malacca because the shophouses in the older part of town really remind me of historic Malaysia, of the baba and nyonya times.
I am actually here for work, so on Monday I went off to work, the people here get up early, go to work early and finish work early! Great isn't it? =) The staff at the client's place are friendly, and chatter a LOT kekeke! Being that bit auntie you know?
After work, friends of my teammate took us out for a mini tour of Kuching, tried one of the better Chicky rice places operated by ppl who look suspiciously like they belong to a triad. After that, we went for a tour at the largest cineplex in town with a viewing platform. Then we went a lil out of town to Friendship Garden, built with funds donated from organisations in China in commemoration of 30 years of Engineering and Construction partnerships. The garden was absolutely exquisite, sort of like a mini Chinese garden right in MALAYSIA.
The greatest thing was not how the garden was so beautifully designed and constructed (complete with a statue of Cheng Ho posing in a very ultraman like pose) but the fact that there were people young and old at the garden, in a community line dancing session! Its almost like being in a Beijing public garden and seeing the people at Tai Chi sessions... Sweet... and really gives one a sense of how the people really belong and are really relaxed and happy. ;)
