According to the IHT, Heath Ledger was found dead in his room at his SOHO apartment in NYC on the 22nd of January 2008. He was only 28.The police have not yet released any report as to the COD or any other details other than there were no signs of disturbance or altercations and sleeping pills were found near him.
It really does make one wonder, if he did take his own life... what made him do it? He was practically at the height of his career thus far, with more blockbusters due to be released in Summer 2008 having just recently made it to the A-List proper. There seem to be no reason to do something as drastic as this.

yeah a pity isnt? esp after his gay role in brokeback mountain which i didnt watch of course..
urm... i dont think it was suicide... its probably a case of OD....
this episode reminds me of the time River Pheonix was found dead at the Viper room... that too was a major tragedy!
