Where is Kampung New Zealand?

I discovered this quirky piece of information from the Sydney Morning Herald's Column 8 which I still read nowadays. Even though I've been back in Malaysia for three years already. =p

I just can't get enough of the Aussie humour and the civic consciousness and general wealth of information (whether useful or not) of these people. They may not all be learned in the academic way, but they are well learned and informed with regards to general knowledge. Which makes the discussion oh so interesting!

Anyways, this is what I discovered:

Are we getting tired of weird Antipodean place names cropping up north of the equator? Well, we're not allowed to just yet. "In answer to Mark Boddy's question on the name 'Kampung New Zealand' (New Zealand Village) in Malaysia," writes Aria Shanker of Waverley, "this dates back to the Malayan Emergency (1948-1960) and the fight against communist insurgents.

Kampung New Zealand is a 'new village', established to bring scattered rural folk to centralised townships where they could be defended against communist extortion (for food, etc).

The new villages were also better serviced by schools, clinics and other services. Apparently this lot of villagers were relocated by New Zealanders, and decided they liked their new home so much they named it after them. Incidentally, there is also a 'Kampung Coldstream', relocated by a troop of Coldstream Guards."

Can anyone tell me why I grew up educated by the Malaysian education system and have never heard of these places?
